Gina Torres (born April 25, 1969) is a Cuban American television and movie actress. She has appeared in many television series, including Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (as Nebula), Xena: Warrior Princess (as Cleopatra), the short-lived Cleopatra 2525, Alias (as Anna Espinosa), Firefly (as Zoe Washburne), Angel (as Jasmine), 24 (as Julia Miliken), Suits (as Jessica Pearson), and The Shield (as Sadie Kavanaugh).

She starred in the independent film South of Pico as Carla, and reprised her Firefly role in its feature film sequel Serenity. Currently, she has a main role on the USA Network show Suits as Jessica Pearson. She and real-life husband Laurence Fishburne played a married couple on the NBC television series Hannibal.

Torres was born at the Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital in Manhattan, the youngest of three children. Her family lived briefly in Washington Heights before moving to The Bronx. Her parents were both of multiracial Cuban descent, and her father worked as a typesetter for La Prensa and The New York Daily News.

Torres, a mezzo-soprano, began singing at an early age and attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City. She also trained in opera and jazz and performed in a gospel choir. Torres applied and was accepted to several colleges but could not afford to attend.[3] She chose instead to pursue her dream of being a performer.

Torres’s film credits include “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions,” “Jam,” “South Of Pico,” “I Think I Love My Wife” with Chris Rock, “Hair Show” with Mo’Nique, “Five Fingers” opposite Laurence Fishburne and “Don’t Let Me Drown” (critic’s choice at the Sundance Film Festival 2009).

The youngest of three children, Torres was born in Manhattan and raised in The Bronx with her close-knit Cuban family. She graduated from Fiorello LaGuardia School of Arts where, before entering the world of acting, she studied opera and jazz as a vocal major. Within a year of graduating, she was cast as Deena Jones in “Dreamgirls,” her first professional acting job. It wasn’t long before she started appearing on Broadway being directed by such legends as Tommy Tune and Pete Masterson in “Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public” and Jerry Zaks in “Face Value.” Her additional theater credits include Off- and Off-Off Broadway plays and musicals that ranged from classic Greek tragedy in “Antigone” and “Amphytrion;” to Shakespeare’s “Pericles of Tyre” and “Julius Cesar;” to contemporary classics such as Lorca’s “Blood Wedding;” to the world premieres of “Sheila’s Day” and “Heliotrope Bouquet.”

Torres and her husband, Laurence Fishburne, reside in Los Angeles with their daughter.

Cool and calculating, Jessica always makes sure that even if one of her attorneys loses, her firm still wins. However, win or lose, she’s got her employees’ backs, and she’s not afraid to go to the mat with anyone foolish enough to pick a fight.

Instrumental in nurturing Harvey’s career, Jessica wasn’t initially impressed by Harvey’s choice of Mike Ross as a potential protégé. However, as Jessica dealt with conniving former partners, failed mergers, and threats from both outside and inside her own firm, she came to see Mike as the asset he truly was.

More recently, Jessica began dating Senior Partner Jeff Malone, and though navigating the personal and professional landmines of a relationship like theirs hasn’t been easy, Jessica has allowed herself to start dismantling some of the walls she has built up over the years. However, there are some things that Jessica isn’t quite ready to share, and Louis’s recent discovery of Mike’s secret may soon put her in the compromising position of having to choose between her blossoming romance and the firm she’s worked so hard to build…
